Family History

George Charlton Bush was born on 16th November 1886 at Nottingham and was the son of William Bush and Eliza Reffen who married in the Basford registration district in 1881. They had four children, three of who were still alive in 1911. These were: Ellen (b.1885), George Charlton (b.1887) and Florence (b.1890). The family lived at: 21 Scotholme Street, Hyson Green [C.1891]; 30 Carver Street, Nottingham [C.1901]; 64 Birrell Road, Sherwood Rise [C.1911 & n.e.p.20.4.1918]. William Bush, who was employed as an insurance commission agent, died at Nottingham, aged 76, in 1936, his wife, Eliza, having predeceased him, dying, aged 74, in 1934. In 1914 George Charlton Bush married Hattie Richards Hales in Nottingham. They had one child Audrey Eveline born 29th June 1916. In the death notice placed in the local newspaper his widow’s address was given as 37 Grimston Road, Radford [n.e.p.20.4.1918]. In 1930 Hattie Richards Bush married George W. Starbuck in the Bingham registration district. She died at Nottingham, aged 98, in 1983.

Military History

Enlisted at Nottingham; formerly served with the 224733 Royal Army Service Corps [Service No.224733] before joining the 5th Bn. Tank Corps; died of his wounds; buried at Namps-au-Val British Cemetery, Somme, France.

Until the day breaks. – From his loving wife and little daughter, Audrey. “BUSH. – In loving memory of George Charlton, dearly loved and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Bush, 64 Birrell-road, died of wounds, March 28th, 1918. Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. – From loving mother, father, Nellie, Floss, Louis, Fred, and Kathleen. “BUSH. – In loving memory of George, died of wounds, March 28th, 1918, the beloved son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Hales, and brother-in-law of Evelyn and Claude. Ever in our thoughts. “BUSH. – In loving memory of George, Tank Corps, died of wounds, March 28th, 1918. Fond memories cling. – Annie, Frank, and little Marjorie.” In memoriam published 29th March 1920 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “BUSH. – In loving memory of my dear husband, George Charlton, Tank Corps, Grimston-road, died of wounds, France, March 28th, 1918. Cherished memories. – Loving wife and little daughter Audrey. “BUSH. – In loving memory of George Charlton, dearly loved and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Bush, 64 Birrell-road, died of wounds March 28th, 1918. Too dearly loved to be forgotten. – Loving mother, father, Nellie, Floss, Louis, and Fred. “BUSH. – In loving memory of George, Tank Corps, beloved son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. Hales, and brother-in-law of Eveline, Frank, Claude, Annie.
