Family History

Thomas Beecroft (junior) was born in 1889 the son of Thomas Beecroft (senior) a green grocer and Lucy Beecroft née Palmer of 128 North Gate New Basford, Nottingham. His father Thomas (senior) was born in 1846 at Nottingham and his mother Lucy Jane Palmer was born in 1857 at Nottingham, married in 1886 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they went on to have the following children, Robert Elliott b1888, Thomas b1889, Lily b1892, Horace b1893, Hilda b1896, Eliza b1898, Lucy May b1901 and Emma Dorothy b1903 all were born in Basford. Thomas married Matilda Rebecca Handley in 1908 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at 14 Albert Street, Hucknall and went on to have the following children, Samuel Robert born 18th December 1909, Grace Myra born 10th October 1911, Margaret Rebecca born 26th September 1913 and Ruth Elizabeth born 25th June 1915. In 1911 the family are living at 8 Allcocks Yard, Watnall Road, Hucknall and are shown as Thomas 22 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Matilda 21 yrs and their son Samuel 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at 128 North Gate New Basford and are shown as Thomas 68 yrs a green grocer, he is living with his wife Lucy Jane 54 yrs and their children, Robert Elliott 23 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Lily 19 yrs a carriage grinder, Horace 18 yrs a hosiery trimmer, Lucy May 10 yrs a scholar and Emma Dorothy 8 yrs of age. Following his death his widow was awarded a pension of 33 shillings and 9 pence a week which commenced on 25th November 1918 His widow later remarried to become Matilda Rebecca Blackhurst (formerly Beecroft) of 5 Byron Street Hucknall Torkard Nottinghamshire.

Military History

Lance Corporal Thomas Beecroft, 2nd Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action on 23rd March 1918. He was commemorated on the Arras Memorial.

Extra Information

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour 14/4/1919: 'Beecroft. Missing March 21st 1918 now officially reported killed on that date. Corporal Thomas Beecroft 2nd Sherwood Foresters second son of Mrs Beecroft 128 Northgate Basford. Always in our thoughts.' His brother Horace Beecroft, served with the 51st Battery, 39th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He died of wounds on 9th December 1917 (CWGC 19 December). He was buried in Nottingham (New Basford) Cemetery on 13 December (grave ref. C.1.4).
