Family History

He was the son of William and Isabella Barwise William senior was born in Workington, Cumbria, and his wife, Isabella nee Dockray, in Eaglesfield, Cumbria. They were married in the registration district of Cockermouth in 1889 (O/N/D). On the 1911 Census they declared that they had been married for 21 years and had had ten children of whom only eight were still living at the time of the census. Eight children were named on the census of 1901 and 1911: Mary (b. abt 1893), Nicholas (b. 1895), Annie (b. 1896 J/A/S), William b. 1897 O/N/D), Isabella (b. 1899 J/A/S), John (b. 1901 A/M/J), Jonathan (b. 1902 O/N/D) and Elizabeth Ellen (Nellie) (b. 1905 J/A/S). Mary was born in Broughton, Lancashire, but all her siblings were born in Mansfield. In 1891, less than two years after their marriage, William (23), a coal miner, and Isabella (21) were living at Arelcdon Farm, Arlecdon, Cumbria. Their daughter Mary was born in Lancashire in 1893 but their son Nicholas was born in Mansfield in 1895 suggesting that the family moved to Nottinghamshire shortly after Mary's birth. By 1901 William and Isabella were living at 12 Clifford Street, Mansfield, with their children, Mary (8), Nicholas (6), Annie (4), William (3) and Isabella (1). They had moved to 15 Talbot Street, Mansfield, by 1911. William and Isabella now had eight children at home; Mary, Nicholas, Annie, William, Isabella and three younger children, John (9), Jonathan (7) and Nellie (5). Mary and Annie were working as cotton winders/minders, while both Nicholas and William were coal miners like their father. William's father predeceased him, dying on 18 May 1915 aged 48 years. His sister Mary died at the age of 29 on 7 March 1922. His brother Nicholas, who married Edith M Parson in June 1920, probably died in 1927 aged 32. His mother died on 15 February 1937 aged 67 years.
