Family History

Thomas Frederick Barlow was born in 1893 at Southwell and was the youngest son of Alfred an ostler and the late Sonata Charlotte Barlow née Shumach of Westgate, Southwell. His father Alfred was born in 1855 at Southwell and his mother Sonata Charlotte was born in 1853 at Southwell, she died on 13th January 1894 at Southwell she was 41 yrs of age, they were married on 20th October 1885 at Hyson Green, Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Sonata May b1887, Ada Constance b1889, Alfred Henry b1891 and Thomas Frederick b1893, all were born in Southwell. In the 1911 census , his widowed father Alfred is living with his two sons Henry and Thomas at Westgate Southwell, they are boarding with Thomas Jackson 57 yrs a baker and his wife Edith 56 yrs and their children, Alfred is shown as being 56 yrs a widow and ostler at livery stables, his sons Henry is 19 yrs and a threader at a lace curtain factory and Thomas 17 yrs also a threader at a lace curtain factory.

Military History

Private Thomas Frederick Barlow enlisted at Southwell and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment . He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial Somme, France
