Lewis Luther Bayley was born in 1896 the son of William a farm labourer and Emma Bayley née Hughes, of Main Street, Markfield. William was born in 1858 at Thornton, Lancashire, Emma Hughes was born in 1860 at Rothley, Leicestershire, married in 1879 at Market Bosworth they went on to have 11 children, however one died . In 1911 the family are living at Main Street, Markham. Lewis married Esther Flint (born 18th June 1897) on 19th January 1918 they were married at the Parish Church at East Kirkby they lived at 21 Portland Street, East Kirkby. Commencing 11th November 1918 his widow Esther was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. His widow remarried to become Esther Braddow and lived at 25 Lime Street East Kirkby Nottinghamshire.
Private Lewis Bayley enlisted on 5th September 1914 at Coalville, Leicestershire giving his age as 19 years and 231 days, his occupation was that of a quarryman. Appointed Lance Corporal on 3rd April 1915 he landed in France on 22nd December 1916. He was wounded in action a gun shot wound to his right arm on 14th July 1916 and returned to England on 16th July 1916 . Following his recovery he returned to France on 21st December 1916 and was killed in action on 16th April 1918 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial, Belgium
