Family History

Herbert Ashley was born in 1899 he was the son of Benjamin a stone mason and Elizabeth Ashley née Lee and the brother of Albert, Fred, Benjamin and Edith Ashley of Skegby. Benjamin was born in 1858 at Sheffield, Elizabeth Lee was born in 1859 at Mansfield, they were married in 1877 their marriage was recorded in the Nottingham registration district, they went on to have 7 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at Skegby Forest near Mansfield, Benjamin 53 yrs a stone mason, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 53 yrs and their 5 children including Herbert 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Hebert Ashley enlisted at Derby, he served with the 12th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He died of wounds on 13th September 1917 and is buried at Reninghelst New Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot 4, Row F. Grave 3.
