Family History

Walter Rose was born in Calverton in 1898 and was the son of John a wheelwright and Sarah Rose née Marriott of Burnor Pool, Calverton. His father John was born in 1854 at Calverton, he died in 1919 aged 65 yrs, his mother Sarah Marriott was born in 1858 at Woodborough they were married in 1878 at Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were, Ernest 1879, Henry b1881, Wallace b1882, William b1889, Frederick b1890,George b1893, Alice b1895, and Walter b1898, all were born in Calverton. In the 1911 census the family were living at Burnor Pool, Calverton and are shown as John 57 yrs a wheelwright, he is living with his wife Sarah 53 yrs and their children, Wallace 29 yrs a groom, George 18 yrs a groom, Alice 16 yrs a hosiery embroiderer and Walter 13 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Walter Rose, enlisted in Nottingham and served with the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was killed in action in France & Flanders. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme.

Extra Information

His elder brother, George Frank, enlisted into the Royal Field Artillery and was killed in action in 1918.
