George was born in 1882 in Sheffield and was the son of George a foreman maltster and Elizabeth Haughton, of 57, Moorgate, Retford. George came from Nettleham , Lincs while Elizabeth was from West Stockwith judging by the birth place of their children they llived in Gainsborough, Sheffield and Rotherham before finally settling in Retford. They had four sons and two daughters and prior to 1900 Elizabeth was left a widow on the death of her husband. However Elizabeth seems to have got on with her life and became the Inn Keeper of the Queens Head, 57 Morgate, Retford and brought up her family there. In the 1911 census George is still living wit his mother at the Queens Head, he is 29 years of age, single and an asphalt labourer.
George enlisted at Retford and at first served with the service number 15045 in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys ) Regiment he later transferred to the machine Gun Corps where he served in the 116th Company . He died on 10th December 1917 and is buried in Adinkerke Military Cemetery, Belgium grave reference E 16. It is interesting to note however that in the 'army register of soldiers effects 1901-1929' under his entry for place of death it states " 10/12/17 wounds self inflicted in France "
There are two main variations in the spelling of Haughton / Houghton and vary depending on which document is viewed , it is believed the correct spelling is Haughton CWGC use Houghton while SDGW use Haughton
