George Stanley King was born on 7th September 1895 at Grantham and the only son of the late Edward a traveller and Eleanor Mary King née Rose of East Markham Newark. His father Edward was born in 1844 at Culverthorpe, Lincolnshire, he died in 1910 aged 66 yrs his mother Eleanor Mary Rose was born in 1855 at East Markham, they were married in 1892 their marriage was registered in the East Retford registration district. In the 1911 census his widowed mother is living at 54 Montpelier Road Brighton she is shown as being 56 yrs a boarding house keeper, she is living with her son George Stanley 15 yrs a scholar.
Private George Stanley King enlisted in Vancouver British Columbia on 13th January 1916 giving his address as Hollyburn West Vancouver British Columbia. He served with the 7th Bn Canadian Infantry and died of wounds on 30th April 1918 and is buried in Ligny-St -Flochel British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France Grave Reference: I A 24
The brass memorial plaque in St John the Baptisit Church East Markham reads :- TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN PROUD AND EVER LOVING MEMORY OF/ GEORGE STANLEY KING/ CANADIAN INFANTRY, ONLY DEARLY LOVED/ CHILD OF EDWARD AND ELEANOR MARY KING/ (AND GRANDSON OF THE LATE I. T. ROSE OF/ THIS PLACE) WHO DIED OF WOUNDS IN FRANCE/ APRIL 30TH 1918, AGED 22./ "INTO THE LIGHT THAT NEVERMORE SHALL FADE
