Arthur was born 30th October 1892 at Little Gringley, Retford and was the son of Charles a farm labourer and Elizabeth Fullard (nee Galloway) , of Little Gringley, Retford, Charles and Elizabeth had a large family of ten children of whom nine were still living in 1911. In the 1901 census there are living in the village and at this time Arthur is 8 years of age. By the 1911 census Arthur has left home is now a servant on a farm at Laxton owned by Samuel Sampson a farmer and his family, he is 18 years of age and a farm servant and single.
Arthur enlisted in Retford in January 1917 and served with service number 75640 in the Lincolnshire Regiment and was later transferred to the Royal Fusiliers serving the 32nd battalion.He was drafted to the Western Front in June 1917 . He was killed by shrapnel whilst in action on 22nd September 1917 his body was never recovered and identified and his name is therefore commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
Pte Arthur Fulard Retford Times 19 Oct 1917 Mr and Mrs Fulard of Little Gringley have received official information that their son, Pte Arthur Fulard, Royal Fusiliers, has been killed in action in France between the 19th and 22nd September. Previous to this communication, Mrs Fulard received the following letter from Sgt Kew who wrote on behalf of the NCO’s and men of his platoon:- “I am very sorry to have to tell you of the death of your son, Pte A Fulard. He died in action on September 20th. He was a brave and good soldier and we shall all feel his loss very much indeed. It is some small consolation to know that he felt no pain, but was killed instantly. He died at the post of duty firing his gun amidst and awful bombardment. As his platoon Sergt please allow me to express my deep sorrow and sympathy with you at his loss.” Pte H Gay also wrote stating that Arthur was killed instantaneously by shrapnel on September 20th and adds:- “He and I were in training together so you will know how I miss him.” Pte Fulard would have been 25 years of age last Monday and was formerly in the employ of Mr Brown Sturton. He joined the colours in the last week of January this year and was drafted to France in June. Mr Fulard has been employed for many years on the Grove estate and deep sympathy is felt with him and his wife in their sad bereavement.
