John Smith was born in 1893 the son of Hezekiah a coal miner deputy and the late Hannah Smith née Bradbury of 22 Bentinck Road, Annesley Woodhouse, Hezekiah was born in 1859 and Hannah Bradbury was born in 1861 both were born in Kirkby in Ashfield, Hannah died in 1913 aged 52 yrs, they had 11 children, 3 died in infancy or early childhood, the surviving children were, Albert b1890, Mary b1891, John b1893, Alfred b1895, William b1897, Hezekiah b1900 and Ada b1904 all were born in Kirkby. In 1911 the family are living at Reform Street, Annesley Woodhouse

Military History

Private John Smith enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at Annesley Woodhouse, He was killed in action on 14th July 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
