George was born at Sturton Le Steeple the son of George a farmer and Sarah Ann Benson (nee Keyworth) of Sturton, he was part of a large family having some 9 siblings. In the 1911 census he is still living at home with his parents and siblings he is shown as 21 years of age , single and working on the family farm.
His army service records shows that he attested for the duration of the war at Retford on 12th December 1915, he gave his age as 26 year 3 months ,that he was single and a farmer and that his next of kin was his father George Benson at Sturton.He was then placed into the army reserve and was mobilised on 24th January 1917, On 3rd February 1917 was at Retford was given a medical examination at which time it was noted he was 27 years and 2 days of age. While still with the training reserve battalion he became ill and was admitted to the Cannock Chase Rugeley Camp Military Hospital where on 25th February 1917 he died, the cause of death being 'acute septic bronchitis' .He was then taken home and was buried in the church yard of St Peters and St Pauls at Sturton le Steeple.
He is buried in Sturton Le Steeple, St Peter and St Paul Churchyard.
