William Edward Wells was born in 1896 at Pleasley Hill, he was the son of Harold Hickton Wells and Sarah Jane Wells née Hallam of Pleasley.His father Harold Hickton was born in 1872 at Pleasley Hill, his mother Sarah Jane Hallam was born in 1872 also at Pleasley, they were married in 1894 at Pleasley and went on to have the following children, William Edward b1895, Gladys b1897, Mary Elizabeth b1898, Clifford b1900, Harold b1904, Mabel b1908 and Annie b1910 all were born at Pleasley Hill. In the 1911 census the family are living at 84 Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill and are shown as Harold Hickton Wells 39 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Sarah Jane 39 yrs and their children, William Edward 16 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Gladys 14 yrs a cotton spinner, Mary Elizabeth 13 yrs a scholar, Clifford 11 yrs a scholar, Harold 7 yrs a scholar, Mabel 3yrs of age and Annie 6 months old. William Edward married his wife Mary Hawksley, they married in 1916 in the Mansfield area, they had a son William Edward, born summer 1918. they lived at 15 Sherwood Street, Warsop.

Military History

Private William Edward Wells enlisted at Mansfield whilst residing at New Houghton, he initially served with the service number 64901 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 30th October 1918 whilst serving with the 11th battalion Essex Regiment and is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen
