Family History

George was born in 1898 at Dunham the son of George an agricultural labourer and Fanny Turner. In the 1911 census he is living in Dunham with his widowed mother Fanny and his brother Ben , George is 12 years of age and a scholar.

Military History

George attested on 11th September 1916 at Retford , he gave his age as 18 years and 5 months , his next of kin , his mother Fanny of Dunham on Trent , his occupation as that of groom and his religion as Church of England. He completed his training and on 12th October 1917 he embarked for France to join the British Expeditionary Force, he disembarked the same day and on 17th October was posted to the 16th battalion Sherwood Foresters. On 24th April 1918 he received a head wound from which he died on 6th May 1918. he was buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, pas De Calais , France grave reference IX B 24

Pte George Turner Retford Times 31st May 1918 Another Dunham hero in the person of Pte George Turner, Notts and Derbys, son of the late Mr and Mrs George Turner has laid down his life for his country. He was 19 years of age and died of wounds in France on May 2nd. He joined up in April 1917 and went to France in October 1917. Before joining the Army he was employed as a groom by Mr T W Cartwright, Darlton. His brother Pte Ben Turner is serving in an agricultural Company in this country.
