Family History

John William Sheldon was born in 1897 at East Kirkby, Nottinghamshire he was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Sarah Ann Sheldon née Clayton of 1 Byron Street, East Kirkby, Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1867 at Middleton, Derbyshire, his mother Sarah Ann Clayton was born in 1876 at East Kirkby, they were married in 1896 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children, sadly two were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Byron Street, East Kirkby, William 44 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living his wife Sarah Ann 35 yrs and their children, Emma Hallam 17 yrs, John William 13 yrs a colliery banksman and Elsie May 1 year of age.

Military History

Private John William Sheldon enlisted at East Kirkby, he served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action on 25th April 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, France.
