Arthur Edward Horsley was born in 1887 at Southwell and was the son of the late Robert a retired Inn Keeper and Eliza Horsley née Ostler of Southwell. His father Robert was born in 1832 I n Southwell and his mother Eliza Ostler was born in 1847 in Branston, Lincolnshire, they were married on 25th November 1885 , their marriage was recorded in the Lincoln Registration District. They went on to have two other children, Robert Ormonde Duke b1886 Southwell and Hilda Mary b1890 Southwell. His father Robert died on 20th December 1901 at Southwell he was 71 yrs of age. In the 1911 census the family are living at 'Ormonde House' Easthorpe, Southwell and are shown as Eliza, head widow 53 yrs living on private means, she is living with two of her children, Robert Ormonde Duke 24 yrs a railway clerk for the midland railway and Hilda Mary 20 yrs a dress makers assistant also present at the address is a visitor Mary Sturgess 20 yrs and a servant Vilola Ryatt 15 yrs a general servant. In 1911 Arthur Edward has left home and is serving in the Army, he is shown as being 25 yrs of age single and serving with the 12th Lancers

Military History

Private Arthur Edward Horsley, enlisted at Southwell and served with 'A' Squadron, the 12th Lancers. He landed in France on 15th August 1914 and died of wounds on 9th October 1918. He is buried in Ramicourt British Cemetery, Aisne, France (grave ref A.2).
