Father: William Garner, born in 1847 at Rampton, Nottinghamshire and working as a commercial traveller's porter. Jane Garner, born in 1852 at Altofts, Yorkshire. Brothers: Joseph Richard, born in 1874 at Altofts and working as a packer, John Henry, born in 1886 at Altofts and working as a lace machine fitter and William, born in 1888 at Normanton, Yorkshire and working as an iron turner. Sisters: Anne Maria, born 1880 at Altofts, Sarah Elizabeth, born in 1882 at Altofts and working as a lace clipper and Edith Alice, born in 1884 at Altofts and working as a lace clipper and scalloper. The family lived at 31 Deering Street, meadows, Nottingham before moving to 34 Cremorne Street, Meadows, Nottingham. Arthur Garner later moved to 8 Havelock Street, Nottingham.
Cpl. Garner volunteered for service and attested on 14/10/1914 at Nottingham and joined 1/7th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. He was appointed lance corporal on 31/10/1915 and on 01/03/1915 he was promoted to corporal. He was drafted to France on 28/06/1915. There battalion was in action in the Bethune sector, and it was there that Cpl. Garner was killed in action. he was buried at Vermelles British Cemetery.
Personal inscription on CWGC headstone: 'A noble life laid down. Ever in our thoughts, from all at home' Nottingham Post notice 4 November 1915: 'Garner. Killed in action October 13th, Corporal A Garner, 1/7th Sherwood Foresters, age 23. 34 Cremorne Street. Mother, father, sisters, brothers.'
