Joseph Edmund Gadsby

Joseph was the son of Joseph Turner Gadsby and Ada Mary Gadsby nee Hemmington. Joseph Turner was born about 1870 in Chesterfield and Ada in Riddings, Derbyshire. However, they probably met when they were both living in Wigston Magna, Leicestershire - Joseph was living in Wigston Magna by 1881, although by 1891 he was working in Stavely, Derbyshire, while Ada was living in Wigston Magna in 1891. They were married in 1893 (registration district Blaby, Leicestershire) and had three children; Herbert James (b. 4 November 1895, Wigston), Joseph Edmund and Marjorie (b. 1903, Hasland, Derbyshire). In 1901 Joseph (30) and Ada (26) were living at Saunders Houses, Storforth Lane, Hasland, Derbyshire, with their two sons, Herbert (5) and Joseph (2). Joseph was a railway engine driver. By 1911 the family was living on Portland Road, Selston, Nottinghamshire, and there was now a third child, Marjorie (7). Joseph Turner was now a loco engine driver at a colliery. At the time of Joseph's death in 1918 his parents were living at 86 Diamond Avenue, East Kirkby, Nottinghamshire, and were still at that address when their surviving son, Herbert, was married in 1919. Joseph and Ada later lived at The Haven, Clumber Street, East Kirkby (CWGC). Joseph Turner died in 1951 aged 81 (registration district Basford). Herbert joined the Royal Navy on 27 July 1915; his civilian occupation had been fitter trimmer. He was still serving in the Navy as an electrical artificer when he married Florrie Pearce (23) daughter of William Richard Pearce, a prison officer, at the Garrison Church of St Peter, Portland, Dorset, on 13 October 1919. Herbert left the Navy on 21 February 1928. He died aged 79 in 1975 (death registered Portsmouth). Marjorie married Frederick A Noon in 1927 (registration district Leicester) and died aged 91 in 1994 (death registered Barnstaple, Devon).
