Family History

Thomas Beardsmore was born in 1892 the son of Arthur Thomas a coal miner hewer and Mary Elizabeth Beardsmore née Gibson of 18 The Hill, Kirkby in Ashfield . Arthur Thomas was born in 1860 at Pinxton, Mary Elizabeth Gibson was born in 1864 at Oxton, married on 16th September 1882 at Mansfield Woodhouse, they went on to have 10 children, 2 of whom died in infancy or early childhood.

Military History

12th Signal Company, Royal Engineers Thomas was killed in action on 3 October 1916, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France (Pier and Face 8 A and 8 D).

Mansfield Reporter, 10 November 1916 : ‘Kirkby Pioneer Killed. Pioneer T Beardsmoor, of The Hill, Kirkby, who volunteered for service on Aug. 30th, 1914, was killed in action on October 3rd. He was 24 years of age.’ (www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk)
