Thomas Henry Marsh was the first child born in 1879 to James Henry Marsh and Mary Jane Rex. They were both natives of Clarborough and married there in 1877.and lived at Moorgate Retford. James earned his living as a bricklayer and by 1884 had had two more children born in Clarborough, Fred born 1890 and Beatrice born 1884.By 1891 the family left Clarborough and moved to Retford. James continued his bricklaying profession and when old enough, his two boys followed in his footsteps by taking up his trade and Beatrice contributing by becoming a dress maker. In 1901 the family were living at 5 Artillery Terrace, Ordsal, Retford and after this date, the offspring all married in Retford, Fred married Harriet Shaw in 1902 and in 1911 was living with his in-laws and his wife and daughter, Annie, at 8 Wharf Road, Retford. Beatrice married in 1908, to Edwin McLaughland and Thomas Henry Marsh married Margaret Shadboult and by 1911 had three children Thomas Edmond born 1907 - Annie born 1909 and Mary born 1910 and were living at Bleach House, Retford.
Although resident in Retford, Thomas enlisted at Chatham in Kent. He initially joined the Royal Engineers number 53292 but later transferred to the Sherwood Foresters 11 Battalion. He died of his wounds and is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery. France Sapper T H Marsh Retford Times 19th April 1918 News has been received that Sapper T H Marsh, Royal Engineers, who lived at 19 Poplar Street, Retford, son of Mr and Mrs J Marsh, Ladybridge Cottages Babworth, died of wounds on April 9th at No. 8 Stationary Hospital, France. The deceased was employed on the Babworth estate under Brigadier-General Denison before joining the Army and his father has worked on the Babworth estate for over 40 years. He joined up on January 23rd 1916, but was sent home. He was called up again on February 20th 1917 and was wounded on March 29th. He leaves a widow and two children with whom great sympathy is felt in their bereavement. He was 40 years of age.
