Henry Clayphan (junior) was born in 1899 the son of Henry (senior) a railway platelayer and Sarah Claypham née Dovey and the brother of William, Mary, Albert, James Edward and Elizabeth Ann Claypham. In 1911 they lived at 6 Orchard Road Kirkby in Ashfield. Henry was born in 1863 at Blyth, Nottinghamshire, Sarah Dovey was born in 1875 at Annesley Woodhouse, married on 22nd June 1895 at the Parish Church at Annesley.

Military History

Privat Henry Clayphan was called up at Nottingham whilst residing at Ashfield he was killed in action on 22 August 1918 and was buried in Dernacourt Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme (grave ref. X.J.17).

He was born J/A/S/1898 so may have been 20 when killed. Mansfield Reporter, 30 August 1918: ‘Killed in Action. News has been received by Mr and Mrs. Clayphan, of Orchard-road, that their son Harry, who was an observer in the RGA, was killed in action in France last week.
