Family History

Robert Buxton was born in 1895 at Eastwood and was the son of Robert Matley a farm labourer and Jane Buxton née Whiteaker of Newthorpe Common Nottinghamshire His father Robert was born in 1864 at Ingleby, Derbyshire his mother Jane Whiteaker was born in 1870 at Stanton by Bridge, Derbyshire, they were married on 3rd November 1885 at the parish church at Foremark, Derbyshire, they went on to have the following children Violet b1887 Chellaston, Florence b1889. Stanton by Bridge, Alfred 1890 Stanton by Bridge, Edith Annie b1893 Bunny, Notts, Robert b1895 Eastwood, Agnes b1900 Newthorpe, Alice b1902 Newthorpe and Walter b1909 Newthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Newthorpe Common and are shown as Robert Matley 46 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Jane 41 yrs and their children, Florence 22 yrs a cleaner, Edith Annie 18 yrs a leather worker, Robert 16 yrs a brick yard labourer, Agnes 11 yrs a scholar, Alice 9 yrs a scholar and Walter 2 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Robert Buxton, was conscripted in May 1917 and trained in Ireland and at Withernsea and Clipstone. He initially served with the service number 35584 with the Lancashire Fusiliers. He later transferred to serve with “B” Company, 24th Battalion Machine Gun Corps, he was wounded and taken prisoner on 21st March 1918. He died of wounds and pneumonia in German hands on 15th July 1918 and is buried in Hamburg Cemetery.
