Family History

William Wain was born in 1897 at Sutton in Ashfield, he was the son of George a coal miner hewer and Matilda Wain née Marsh of Prospect Place, Sutton in Ashfield. George was born in 1858 at Calverton, Matilda Marsh was born in 1860 at Sutton in Ashfield, they were married on 10th November 1878 at ST Mary’s Church, Sutton in Ashfield, they had 12 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at Prospect Place, Sutton in Ashfield, George 53 yrs is a coal miner hewer he is living with his wife Matilda 51 yrs and their children, Edgar 20 yrs a coal miner loader, Maggie 19 yrs, John 14 yrs a hanger on below ground, William 14 yrs a pony driver coal miner and Gladys 4 yrs of age. William married Violet Langton (born 12th May 1896 ) in 1914 at Mansfield, they had a daughter Florence Maria Langton born out of wedlock on 17th April 1914 and a second daughter Violet born 15th September 1915, the family lived at 18 New Cross Street, Sutton in Ashfield. His widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 6 pence a week which commenced on 25th December 1916.

Military History

Private William Wain, served with the 1st Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, he was killed in action on 8th June 1916. He is buried in Tranchee de Mecknes Cemetery, Aix-Noulette.
