Robert Turner was born in 1893 he was the son of John Hunt a chimney sweep and Louisa Maria Turner née Marshall of 5 Portland Street, Street, Sutton in Ashfield John Hunt Turner was born in 1852 at Skegby, Louisa Maria Marshall was born in 1855 at Sutton in Ashfield, they were married in 1871 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they had 9 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 5 Portland Street Sutton in Ashfield John is 59 yrs and is a chimney sweep, he is living with his wife Louisa 56 yrs and their son Robert 18 yrs a coal miner pony driver. Robert married Elsie Walker (born 29th October 1893) in 1912 their marriage was recorded in the Mansfield registration district, they lived at 84 Dalestorth Street, Sutton in Ashfield, they had a daughter Ivy born 22nd April 1913. Commencing 24th December 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Robert Turner enlisted at Sutton in Ashfield, served with the 1/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. he went to France 2nd March 1915 and died as a prisoner of war 12th May 1917. He is buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery Grave Reference: VIII E 19
