Frederick Harry Jepson was born in 1889 at Newark and was the son of Hannah Jepson born 1869 in South Muskham. In the 1911 census he is living with his grandparents at 41 King Street, Newark, he is shown as 21 yrs of age, single and a clothers assistant, he is living with his grandparents Henry Jepson 72 yrs a farm labourer and Annie Elizabeth Jepson 71 yrs. Frederick went on to marry his wife Margaret F.E. Copley in 1915 at Newark, they lived at 7 Friary Road, Newark.
Private Frederick Harry Jepson enlisted at Newark, he initially served with the service number 24778 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was serving with the 2nd battalion Lancashire Fusiliers when he was killed in action on 13th October 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published 4th November 1916 in the Newark Herald :- Husband of Margaret F.E. Jepson, 7 Friary Road, Newark. A native of Newark, his parents residing in King Street. He went to Christ Church School and was afterwards an apprentice at the Newark Clothing Co.’s establishment in Stodman Street. Where he went at age 17 and on completing his time he remained on, being there altogether ten years, up to his enlistment. Joined-up in May 1916 under the Derby Group system. For a week he was attached to the Notts. & Derbys. from whence he was transferred to the North Staffords. In August was home on leave and was later sent with a draft to France, when he was again transferred, to the Lancs. Fusiliers. He leaves a young widow, who was a Miss Copley, daughter of Mrs Copley, 39 William Street, who lost her only son, Pte William Richard Copley in 1915.
