Cyril Sidney Harrison was born in 1896 at Newark and was the son of Thomas an overseer of roads and Emma Harrison née White of Sherwood Avenue Newark. His father Thomas was born in 1853 at Newark and his mother Emma White was born in 1854 at Newark, they were married in 1874 at Newark and went on to have 19 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children all born in Newark were , Thomas b1877, Francis b1878, May b1878, Laura b1880, Leonard b1884, Alfred b1885, Ruth b1887, Lily b1888, Oliver b1889, Mabel b1890, Percy b1892, Nellie b1894, Cyril Sidney b1896 and Kathleen Victoria b1898. In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Cherry Holt Lane, Newark and are shown as Thomas 58 yrs a overseer of roads for the borough council, he is living with his wife Emma and their children, My 33 yrs no occupation listed, Laura 31 a dress maker, Lily 23 yrs a teacher, Oliver 22 yrs a teacher, Mabel 21 yrs an unemployed milliner, Percy 18 yrs an engineers turner, Nellie 17 yrs a dressmaker, Cyril Sidney office clerk and Kathleen Victoria 13 yrs a scholar.
Private Cyril Sidney Harrison enlisted on 7th November 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 18 yrs and his address as 15 Cherry Holt Lane Newark, his next of kin was his father Thomas of the same address. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. On the 18th August 1915 he was posted to the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on the same day. He was killed in action on 14th October 1915 during the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Pas de Calais, France
Article published 14th December 1915 in the Newark Herald :- Youngest son of Thomas & Emma Harrison, Cherryholt Lane, Newark. He was an old Mount School boy and was apprenticed to the fitting shop at Messrs. Ransome’s. He joined the 8th Sherwood Foresters in Nov. 1914 and was drafted to France at the beginning of August 1915. Posted missing during the attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt.
