George Crowder was born in 1883 at Fiskerton and was the son of Edward a maltsters labourer and Sarah Crowder née Smith of 45 Sleaford Road Newark His father Edward was born in 1858 at Rolleston and his mother Sarah Smith was born in 1861 at Southwell, they were married in 1881 at Southwell and went on to have the following children all of whom were born at Fiskerton, Thomas b1882, George b1883, William b1887, Mary Eliza b1889, Beatrice b1892 and Ernest b1895. In the 1911 census the family are living at 45 Sleaford Road, Newark and are shown as Edward 53 yrs a maltsters labourer, he is living with his wife Sarah 50 yrs and their children, George 28yrs a coal porter, Harry 26 yrs a general labourer, William 24 yrs a furniture dealer, Mary Eliza 22 yrs no occupation, at home, Beatrice 19 yrs a machinist and Ernest 16 yrs a turners apprentice.
Private George Crowder enlisted on 1st May 1916 at Derby whilst residing at Newark, he served with the 2nd battalion Lancashire Regiment. He had initially served with the service number 44788 in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 12th October 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
Article published 5th September 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Second son of Edward & Sarah Crowder, 45 Sleaford Road, Newark. A native of Fiskerton and employed in the ball bearing department of Ransome & Co. Enlisted on the 1st May 1916 in the North Staffs. Transferred to the Lancs. Fusiliers a fortnight before he was posted missing on 12th Oct. 1916. Declared dead in Aug. 1917.
