Family History

George Henry Baines was born in 1890 at Richmond barracks, Dublin and was the son of George Henry a maltster and Charlotte Elizabeth Baines née Barton of 6 Spital Row North Gate Newark Nottinghamshire. His father George was born in 1856 in Lincolnshire, he died in 1916 at Newark aged 63 yrs and his mother Charlotte Elizabeth Barton was born in 1861 at Hastings, they were married in 1884 at St Georges Church, Hanover Square, London. They had the following children, Albert George Barton b 1882 Hastings, Sussex, Jessie b1889 London, George Henry b1890 Dublin, Ellen b1895 Dublin, Kate b1897 North Muskham and Sidney b1901 North Muskham. In the 1911 census the family are living at6 Spital Row, Northgate, Newark and are shown as George 57 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Charlotte 50 yrs and his children, George 21 yrs a maltster Kate 14 yrs at home, Sidney 10 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private George Henry Baines enlisted at Nottingham on 25th June 1907, he gave his age as 18 yrs and three months. He served with the Grenadier Guards and on 24th June 1910 was transferred to the Army reserves having served his time (3 yrs with the colours) Upon the outbreak of war he was recalled and mobilised on 4th August 1914 at London. He served once more with the Grenadier Guards, however on 11th September 1914 aged 25 yrs he was discharged from the Army suffering from pulmonary thrombosis of the lungs. He was discharged to 6 Spital Row, Northgate, Newark. He died on 16th December 1916 at Hastings Sussex and is buried at Hastings Cemetery, Sussex.
