Family History

Alfred Ernest Southerington was born on 27th May 1891 at Newark and was the son of William a maltster and Susan Southerington née Brown of 9 North Gate Newark. His father William was born in 1849 at Thorpe on the Hill, Lincolnshire and his mother Susan Brown was born in 1854 at Collingham, they were married in 1873 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Jane Ann b1874 Girton,, William Gibbin b1875 Newark, Alice b1877 Newark, George Brown b1880 Newark, Henry b1881 Newark and Alfred Ernest b1891. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 9 North Gate Newark and are shown as William 62 yrs a maltster, he is living with his wife Susan 57 yrs and their son Alfred 19 yrs a tailors cutter. George married his wife Mary Hannah Clark on 29th December 1904 at St Leonards Church , Newark, they went on to have a son Herbert born 3rd August 1908 and lived at 11 North Gate Newark. In the 1911 census he and his family are shown living at 11 Northgate, Newark and are shown as George Brown Southerington 33yrs a stoker, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 35 yrs and their son Herbert aged 2 yrs.

Military History

Private Alfred Ernest Southerington attested on 16th November 1915 at Newark, he gave his age as 24 yrs and 174 days, his address as 9 Northgate, Newark, his next of kin was his father William of the same address , he was a cloth cutter by trade. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 20th March 1916 reporting at Derby . He was posted to the Lincolnshire Regiment and then transferred to the Royal Scots Regiment. He landed in France on 5th March 1917 and was wounded in action a gun shot wound to his right arm on 9th April 1917, he was treated in hospital and discharged fit for duty on 30th April 1917. He was again wounded in action on 14th October 1917 however he died of these wounds at 47th casualty clearing station and is buried at Dozinghem Military Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Extra Information

His brother Private George Brown Southerington enlisted at Newark on 8th April 1915 and served with the 2/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He saw action in Ireland during the Dublin Rebellion in April 1916. Later transferred to the Western Front in February 1917 . He was killed in action on 26th September 1917 during the battle for Passchendaele Ridge, he has no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Article published 31st October 1917 in the Newark Advertiser :- Son of William & Susan Southerington, 9 Northgate, Newark. As a boy attended the Mount School and St. Leonard’s Sunday School. and was also in the choir. Later he attended Christ Church and was a member of the Christ Church Bible Class. After leaving school was employed by Messrs. Mumby and Son until enlistment. As a footballer he was extremely popular, commencing with Winthorpe, was a prolific goal getter with several Newark League teams. Also a cricketer (all-rounder) with Mumby’s C.C. Went to France last Christmas, but wounded in April and sent home. Out again and went into the trenches on October, 10th. Wounded in the left shoulder and lung on the 12th and died on the 14th.
