George Johnson (junior) was born in 1896 at Newcastle Under Lyme, Staffordshire, he was the son of George Johnson (senior) a coal miner and Mary Johnson née Beswick of Goldenhill, Staffordshire. George Johnson (senior) was born in 1855 at Silverdale, Staffordshire, Mary Beswick was born in 1856 at Goldenhill, Staffordshire, they were married on 25th December 1880 at Johns Church, Golden Hill, they had 5 children, sadly one died in infancy In the 1911 census the family are living at 20 Queen Street, Goldenhill, Stoke on Trent, George 56 yrs is a coal miner, he is living with his wife Mary 55 yrs and two of their children, Harry 25 yrs a coal miner and Mary Ellen 18 yrs a assistant potter. His pension record card shows his sole legatee to be his sister Florence Simpson of 220 Warsop Vale, Mansfield.

Military History

Private George Johnson enlisted at at Shirebrook whilst residing at Warsop Vale. He served initially with the service number 139672 in the Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd April 1915 and is buried at Rue- Petillon Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
