Reginald Sydney Wood was born in 1898 baptised on 26th January 1898 he was the son of the late William Carlin Wood, a coal miner hewer and his first wife the late Sarah Ann Wood née Haywood of 46 Mount Street, Chesterfield Road, Mansfield. William Carlin was born in 1860 at Clay Cross, he died on 2nd January 1914 aged 54 yrs, Sarah Ann Haywood was born in 1865 at Pilsley she died in in 1910 aged 46 yrs. they were married on 25th December 1883 at Clay Cross, they went on to have 8 children. In 1910 his father re married to Henrietta Carpenter b1876 Doncaster, they were married in 1910 in Doncaster. In 1911 the family are living at 7 New Street, Bentley, Doncaster, William Carlin 51 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his second wife Henrietta 35 yrs and his children, Reginald Sydney 13 yrs a butchers errand boy Randall 9yrs Leonard Albert 8 yrs and Rose Mary 5 yrs old.

Military History

Lance Corporal Reginald Sydney Wood enlisted on 17th May 1915 at Mansfield giving a false age of 19 yrs and 120 days (born 1898 he was only 17 yrs) he was a coal miner pony driver. He served with the 8th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, and landed in France on 16th August 1915. He was killed in action on 25th August 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial
