Family History

Thomas James Hayward was born in 1887 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a hosiery warehouseman and Ruth Hayward née Barnes of Belverdere, Kirkby Road, Sutton in Ashfield. Thomas was born in 1861 at London, Ruth Barnes was born in 1865 at Ruddington, they were married in 1884 at Nottingham, they had 7 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents and siblings are living at Belverdere, Kirkby Road, Sutton in Ashfield Thomas 50 yrs is a hosiery warehouse man, he is living with his wife Ruth 45 yrs and their children Alice 17 yrs a hosiery seamer , Nellie Victoria 11 yrds and Charles Lawiston 6 yrs In the same 1911 census Thomas James has left the family home, he was lodging on Savage's Row, Ruddington with John and Hannah Barnes. In 1912, Thomas married Lillian Fordham (born 3rd December 1874) at Hitchin. Hertfordshire, they lived at 58 Green Lane Letchworth. Commencing 10th March 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Thomas James Hayward enlisted at Letchworth whilst residing there, he served with the 1st Bedfordshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 5th September 1918 and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France.
