Family History

Edgar was born in 1899 in Retford and was the son of Charles a plumber and glazier and Elizabeth Ann Markham, of 2, Moorgate, Retford. Charles was originally from Manchester and his wife Elizabeth from Hull. They had seven children but sadly lost two prior to 1911. In the 1911 census the family are living at 2 Moorgate , Retford, Edgar is 12 years of age and a scholar, his older brother Archibald born 1892 and younger siblings Irene born 1901, Constance born 1903 and Norman born 1907 are all living at the family home.

Military History

It would appear that Edgar served with the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) in the 89th training reserve battalion but was transferred to Northern Command Labour Centre Labour Corps serving with service number 493760. He died at Ripon Military hospital on 2nd July 1918 and his body was brought home to Retford where he was buried.
