Father: John Henry Gear, born in 1863 in Nottingham and working as a fish salesman. Mother:Eleanor Kate Gear, born in 1873 in Nottingham. Archie Gear had two sisters; Mabel F., born in 1886 in Nottingham and working as a lady clerk Ethel Ann Jean, born in 1888 in Nottingham and working as a lace jennier. Following the death of her husband Eleanor was remarried in April 1906 to Henry Rogers, a taxi cab driver. Archie Gear was married to Ethel Clara Gear, née Dickinson in September 1916 in Nottingham, and they lived at 17 Moreland Street, Meadows, Nottingham.
Pte. Gear was called up for service and following training was drafted to France.. The Battle of Epehy which took place on 18/09/1918 aimed to reach the ridge above the St. Quentin Canal. 10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters took part in the attack and managed to take its first objective with few casualties, but when they again advanced to Gauche Wood they were soon counter-attacked. Initially they lost some front line trenches, but these were later recaptured. Pte. Gear was killed in action and his body was never recovered. However, his name was commemorated on the Vis en Artois Memorial.
