George Frederick Lester was born in 1896 in Kelvedon, Essex and was the son of Henry a farm labourer and Ellen Elizabeth Lester née Chetwynd of Upton, Southwell. His father Henry was born in 1859 at Kelvedon and his mother Ellen Elizabeth Chetwynd was born in 1869 at Ware, Herefordshire, they were married in 1895 they marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district and went on to have the following children, George Frederick b 1894 Kelvedon, Mabel b1906 Hockerton, Hilda b1909 Hckerton and Clara b1911 Hockerton In the 1911 census the family are living at Hockerton village and are shown as Henry 52 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Ellen 42 yrs and their children, George 15 yrs a farm labourer, Mabel 5yrs, Hilda 2 yrs and Clara 5 months of age.
Private George Frederick Lester enlisted at Whitwell whilst living at Southwell, he served in Gallipoli during 1915 with the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment. He later went to France and was transferred to the 2/8th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment and was killed in action, 7th April 1917, aged 23, during the attack at Le Verguier, north-west of Saint Quentin, France. He is buried at Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy, France. Plot 3. Row A. Grave 45.
