Richard was born in 1899 at Park, Lancashire and was the son of Richard a railway engine driver and Elizabeth Pomfret, of 78, Monk St., Accrington, Lancs. His father was born in 1868 in Lower Darwin, Lancashire and his mother Elizabeth was also born in 1868 in Blackburn. They two other children, Thomas Simpson b1890 and Lilly b1896 both born in Blackburn. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Lonsdale Street Accrington, Lancashire and are shown as :- Richard 43 yrs a railway engine driver; he is living with his wife Elizabeth 43 yrs and their children, Thomas Simpson 21 yrs a railway engine cleaner, Lilly 15 yrs a dress maker and Richard 12 yrs a scholar, also at the address is Thomas 68 yrs, a retired engine driver (Richard's grandfather).
Private Richard Pomfret enlisted at Blackburn. He lied about his age as he was only 16 years old when he was killed. He served in the 3rd battalion Coldstream Guards and was shot on his 16th birthday, 25th February 1915. He died from his wounds two days later on 27th February 1915 and is buried in Chocques Military Cemetery France grave reference I A 28.
Boots ' Comrades in Khaki May/June Edition 1915, notes that ' R Pomfret was a second porter at the Accrington Branch of Boots , and that he was of exceptional physique , 6'2" tall with a chest measurement of 39 inches and weighed 14 stone.' It goes on to state, 'during an engagement in Northern France he was hit by a German bullet on his 16th birthday 25th February 1915.'
