Horace Merrin was born in 1899 at Southwell and was the son of Charles a farm labourer and Minnie Merrin née Booth of Back Lane, Westhorpe, Southwell. His father Charles was born in 1874 at Southwell and his mother Minnie Booth was born in 1874 at Barnby Moor, they were married in 1896 at Southwell and went on to have the following children, Horace b1899, Joseph b1900, Harry b1900, Albert b1902, Esther b1905, James b1908, Hilda b1913 all were born in Southwell. In the 1911 census Horace is living with his widowed grandmother Esther on Back Lane, Westhrope and are shown as Esther 68 yrs a widow, she is living with her son Henry (age unknown ) a farm labourer, and two of her grandchildren, Thomas 16 yrs a farm labourer and Horace 12 yrs a scholar. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings are living on Back Lane, Westhrope and are shown as Charles 37 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his wife Minne 37 yrs and their children, Harry 11 yrs a scholar, Albert 9 yrs a scholar, Esther 6 yrs and James 3 yrs
Private Horace Merrin was called up for service on 19th March 1917 at Mansfield, he gave his age as 18 yrs and 36 days, he gave his address as Westhorpe, Southwell, he stated he was a hay trusser, his religion was Church of England and his next of kin was his mother Minne Merrin of the same address. He was posted to the Training Reserve battalion. He embarked from Folkstone on 31st Mary 1918 and landed the following day at Boulogne, he arrived at Etaples depot on 2nd April 1918 and on 7th April 1918 was posted to the 20th battalion Durham Light Infantry and on 4th September 1918 he was killed in action, Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
