Walter Wombwell was born on 4th April 1881 at Thurgarton and was the son of Christopher a farm labourer and Mary Elizabeth (Eliza) Wombwell née Williams of Westgate Southwell. His father Christopher was born in 1849 at Southwell and his mother Mary Elizabeth Williams was born in 1851 at Carlton Le Moreland they were married in 1871 at Southwell and went on to have 8 children, sadly one died in infancy or early childhood, their children were , Harriett b1872, Harry 1874, Thomas 1879, Walter 1881, Emily b1886, William b1889 and Lucy Annie b1894. Walter married his wife Ethel Holroyd (b1883 Ab Kettleby, Leicestershire ) on 7th August 1909 at the Newark Register office, they lived at 114, Brownlow Rd., Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and went on to have a son Noel Walter born 4th September 1909 at Farndon. In the 1911 census the family are living at Farndon village, Newark and are shown as Walter Wombwell 29 yrs a chair maker, he is living with his wife Ethel 28 year and their son Noel Walter 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census his parents and siblings were living at Westgate Southwell and were shown as Christopher 61yrs a farm labourer he is living with his wife Mary Elizabeth 60 yrs and their children William 22 yrs a gardeners assistant and Lucy Annie 17 yrs a domestic servant.
Private Walter Wombwell was called up on 28th June 1917 at Derby, he gave his age as 36 yrs and 85 days, he gave his address as 114 Brownlow Road, Mansfield and his next of kin as his wife Ethel of the same address, he stated he was a basket maker. He was initially posted on 2nd July 1917 to the Sherwood Foresters and later with service number 243773 to the Yorkshire Regiment. He landed in France on 3rd January 1918 and was transferred to the 7th battalion Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 23rd March 1918 and is buried at Assevillers New British Cemetery, Somme, France.
