He was the son of John and Elizabeth Emlyn. John was born in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, and it is probable that Elizabeth was formerly Elizabeth Gwillyn and born in Australia. At the time of the 1911 Census she and her husband had been married for 27 years (married about 1884). They had three children, all of whom were born in Melbourne, Australia: Winifred Gwladys b abt. 1885, Oswald Ambrose b. abt 1886 and Archibald b. 14 November 1899. The year of birth of their first child, Winifred, in Australia in 1885 suggests that John and Elizabeth might have met and married there. Their youngest child, Archibald, was born in Australia in November 1899 and as the family has not yet been traced on a UK Census in 1901 this might indicate that they did not leave Australia until after March 1901. However, by the time of the 1911 Census John (53), a bookseller and stationer, and Elizabeth (55) were living at 14 Wellington Road, Rhyl, North Wales. All three children were living at home: Winifred (26) was assisting in the business, Oswald was a 'political speaker', and Archibald (11) was still at school. Also in the household was Sarah Williams (26), a general servant. It is likely that John died aged 56 in 1913 (O/N/D St Asaph) and Elizabeth at the age of 59 in 1915 (J/F/M St Asaph). Archibald's sister, Winifred, was notified of her brother's death in 1918; her address is given on the RN record as 5 Bedford Street, Rhyl. Winifred may have married Moses Davies in 1920 (J/A/S Swansea Glamorgan). Oswald died at the age of 58 in 1944 (Dec Brentford Middx).
Archibald was in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (Mersey Division) and was probably conscripted in 1917 when he would have been 18 years old. His last ship was the Royal Naval Depot, Crystal Palace. He died from disease and was buried in Rhyl Town Cemetery, Dyserth Road, Flintshire (ref 2740).
Archibald is also commemorated on the Rhyl war memorial in Christ Church (‘Archie Emlyn’), a Roll of Honour at The County School, Grange Road, Rhyl (Archibald CW Emlyn), the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, North Wales, and a Remembrance Plaque at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Marine Drive, Rhyl, Flintshire [WMA 36452, formerly in the Prince Edward Hospital, Rhyl, opened in 1923 and plaque unveiled in 1928 by HRH The Prince of Wales]. There is also a Flintshire Roll of Honour card for him (undated), signed by his sister, Gwaldys Emlyn, in the County Archives Office, Hawarden.
