He was the son of Charles Henry and Ida Maud Harrold and the brother of Dorothy Beatrice Ann and Mary Gwendoline Joan Harrold. In 1911they lived at 12 Montague Place Worthing Sussex. Charles Harrold later moved to 55 Heene Road Worthing.
13th Bn John Cotterill notes '"Lowther's Contingent" is a reference to the South Downs Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment. Colonel Claude Lowther ( 1870-1929) served in the Boer War and was unsuccessfully recommended for the VC rescuing wounded men under fire. He became Unionist MP for Eskdale in Cumbria. He then bought the ruined Herstmonceaux Castle in Sussex. In 1914 he led a recruiting campaign in the Esatbourne , Hastings , Bexhill , Seaford area which resulted in a large number of Kitchener volunteers. They formed the 11th , 12th , 13th and later 14th Battalions of the Royal Sussex Regiment. The 12th and 13th Battalions took part in a diversionary attack at the Boars Head near Richebourg on 30 Jun 1916 in which they suffered over 1400 casualties. CSM Nelson Carter of 12th Royal Sussex won a posthumous VC in this attack. These four battalions were known colloquially known as "Lowther's Lambs".'
