Family History

Arthur Gregg was born in 1879 at Nottingham, he was the son of Elias Thompson Gregg (born 1856) Basford and Mary Ann Brannon (born 1856 Nottingham.) they were married in 1874 at Nottingham, they had 4 children. Arthur married Sarah Jane Harwood (born 3rd October 1879) in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they lived at 12 St John’s Terrace, Ruddington and had 8 children, Mary Ann b1903, John b1904, Herbert b1906, Alfred Thomas b1908, Florence Hilda b1910, Sarah Nellie b1911, William Arthur b1913 and Reuben Harold b1916. In the 1911 census the family are living at 12 St John’s Terrace, Ruddington Arthur 32 yrs a house painter, he is living with his wife Sarah 32 yrs and 6 of their children. Commencing 29th October 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 38 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private Arthur Gregg enlisted at Derby whilst residing at Ruddington, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was killed in action on 9th April 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial Belgium.
