Employment, Education or Hobbies After attending Glasgow High School Duncan went up to the University of Glasgow to begin studying for a degree in Medicine in 1907 at the age of 19. The family home was in Rothesay and Duncan lodged in Partick, at 26 White Street, c/o Binnie. His study plans changed, however, and he did not continue with Medicine. Instead, he qualified as a pharmacist, passing the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's minor exams in 1913 and registering that year as a chemist and druggist. At one time before the war he worked with Boots the Chemist in Oldham.
Family History

Duncan was the son of James and Flora Brodie. His father was a marine engineer. He was the husband of A Ida of 7 Rosebarn Gardens Edinburgh.

Military History

He attested under the Derby scheme in December 1915 and enlisted with the 105th Training Reserve Battalion in November 1916. Duncan's war began quietly enough, though it would not remain so. In March 1917 he was appointed lance corporal and subsequently posted to Officer Cadet No 6 Battalion Oxford. On 18th September 1917 he was commissioned 2nd lieutenant with the York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed by an exploding shell at the Battle of Asiago. The Austrians penetrated the Allied lines from Grappa to Canove pushing to a depth of about 1000 metres. The ground was later re-taken but the battle claimed many lives.
