Family History

Samuel Benjamin Smith was born in 1896 he was baptised at St Mary's on 22 March 1896, he was the son of Samuel Henry a farm labourer and Eliza Smith née Spittal, of Church Road, Plumtree. Samuel Henry was born in 1860 at Plumtree, Eliza Spittal was born in 1860 at Normanton, they married at St Mary's Church, Plumtree on 3 November 1884. they went on to have 5 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 he was living at Normanton, he was 15 yrs of age a house boy, one of a number of servants living at the home of Bertram Abel Smith 32 yrs a banker and his family.

Military History

Private Samuel Benjamin Smith, enlisted on 4th September 1914 at Newark, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 6 months, he was an electrician living at Church Road, Plumbtree he served with the 1/8th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. Landing in France on 2nd March 1915, he was killed in action on 14th October 1915 and is buried in Cabaret Rouge British Cemetery Grave Reference: XXVII M 14
