Family History

John Henry Curzon was born in 1886 at Southwell and was the son of Walter a jobbing gardener and Mary Curzon née Smith of Waterloo Yard, King Street, Southwel. His father Walter was born in 1853 at Upton and his mother Mary Smith was born in 1854 at Southwell, they were married in 1875 at Southwell and went on to have the following children, Mary Emma b1876, Frances Lois b1879 and John Henry b1885 all were born at Southwell. John Henry married his wife Daisy Barker (born 1885 Horncastle) in 1909 at Southwell they went on to have a son John Ernest born 1910 a daughter Hilda b1917 and a further son Joseph b1918 all were born at Southwelll they lived at Park View Southwell. In the 1911 census John Henry and his family are living at Park View, Southwell and are shown as John Henry 25 yrs a twist hand, he is living with his wife Daisy 26 yrs and their son John Ernest 1 year of age. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Waterloo Yard, King Street, Southwell and are shown as Walter 58 years a jobbing gardener, he is living with his wife Mary 55 yrs and a boarder Henry Smith 53 yrs a builders carter.

Military History

Private John Henry Curzon enlisted at Newark whilst residing at Southwell, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 23rd March 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Extra Information

Article published on 10th April 1918 in the Newark Advertiser :- Resided with wife, Daisy, in Westgate. Went to Southwell Wesleyan School, worked at Carey’s lace factory, and gained a reputation as a defender in the Newark and District League. Enlisted as soon as War broke out, he has had his escapes and escapades. He was once buried in a trench but struggled out. Almost as soon as he recovered, he was gassed.
