Bernard Pike

His first name on the Birth Index is given as Bertrand, as Bernard on CWGC and on census returns as Bertrand and Bertram. He was known in the family as 'Bert'. He was born in 1882 (Apr/May/Jun) the son of Joseph and Sarah Pike nee Hatherley, who had married in 1879. Both Joseph and Sarah were born in Keyworth. According to the information on the 1911 Census they had been married for 29 years and had had eight children born alive of whom seven were still living at the time of the census. Eight children were named on the census between 1881-1911; Hermann, Bertrand, Ada (also 'Vida'), Minnie, Howard, Lily, Maurice and Leonard. In 1881 Joseph (20), a framework knitter, and Sarah (18) and their first child, Hermann (1), were living in Keyworth in the home of her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Hatherley. By 1891 they were living at 109 Deepdale Lane, Keyworth, and had five children; Hermann (11), Bertrand (9), Vida (6), Minnie (3) and Howard (1). Also living with them were Elizabeth's widowed father, Joseph Hatherley (71), and a niece, Emily Hatherley (11), Joseph's granddaughter, who had been living with her grandparents in 1901. By 1901 Joseph and Sarah were living at 262 St Ann's Well Road, Nottingham; Joseph was a shopkeeper 'on his own account' and it is possible that they 'lived above the shop'. Also in the household were their six children, Bertrand, Ada, Minnie, Lily (8), Maurice (6) and Leonard (3). Joseph's father-in-law and niece, Emily, were still living with them. By 1911 Joseph and Sarah had moved to 610 Mansfield Road, Sherwood, Nottingham, where he was a fish dealer with Sarah assisting in the business. Only Howard, Lily and Maurice were in the household on the night of the census. Bertrand's whereabouts in 1911 have not yet been traced. Joseph and Sarah were still living at 610 Mansfield Road when their son was killed in 1915 and the later CWGC record also gives this as their address. Joseph probably died on 29 May 1944.
