Family History

Edgar William Fox was born in 1893 at Car Colston, he was the son of John Thomas a council labourer and Caroline Fox, née Harvey of Ruddington. John Thomas was born in 1869 at Car Colston, Caroline Harvey was born in 1863 at Flintham, they were married on 9th March 1893 at St Wilfrids Church, Screveton, they went on to have 4 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their other surviving child was Lucy Louise born 1895 at Car Colston. In the 1911 census the family are living at 9 Park Road, Carlton, John Thomas 42 yrs is a council labourer, he is living with his wife Caroline 48 yrs and their 2 children, Edgar William 17 yrs an apprentice plumber and Lucy Louise 16 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Edgar Fox enlisted at Sheffield whilst residing at Ruddington, he served with 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, the Former Gallipoli veteran he died on 26th August 1916 in Northamptonshire Military Hospital of wounds . He is buried in Ruddington (St. Peter) Churchyard.

In memoriam published 26th August 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post: “FOX. – In loving memory of Pte. E. W. Fox, Sherwood Foresters, Ruddington, died August 26th, 1916. He did his duty. – From his father, mother, and sister.” Article published in the Northampton Mercury 1st September 1916 :-“Private Edgar William Fox, of the Sherwood Foresters, whose home is at Asher-lane, Ruddington, Nottingham, died at the Northampton General Hospital on Saturday night. Private Fox was brought to the Hospital on August 14 suffering from a gunshot wound in the head, a shrapnel wound in the right arm, and a fractured leg. He was apparently making progress till pulmonary trouble developed. He was 23 yeas of age.” Further article published 30th August 1916 in the Northampton Chronicle and Echo :-“MILITARY HONOURS.“Pte. Edgar William Fox, of the Sherwood Foresters, whose death from wounds in the Northampton General Hospital has been recorded, was taken home to Ruddington, Nottingham, on Tuesday, [29th August 1916] for the funeral. The departure of the coffin was marked with military honours. The coffin was taken to the Castle Station on a gun carriage lent from Weedon, and escort and buglers were provided from the Northampton Depot. The arrangements were made by the local V.A.D., representing whom in the procession was Councillor W.
