William Walton was born in 1880 at Selston and was the son of the late Edward and Emma Walton née Walters of Underwood. His father Edward was born in 1856 at Nether Broughton, Leicestershire, he died in 1899 aged 45 yrs , his mother Emma Walters was born in 1861 at Birchwood, Derbyshire , they were married on 25th December 1878 and went on to have 11 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were , William b1880, Mary b1882, Elizabeth b1884, Joseph b1886, Thomas b1891, Roselie b1894, and Florence b1896 all were born at Selston except Florence who was born at Bagthorpe. In the 1911 census his widowed mother and siblings are living at Underwood and are shown as Emma 49 yrs a widow, she is living with her children, Joseph 25 yrs a coal miner loader, Thomas 20 yrs a coal miner loader, Rosalie 17 yrs working at home, Florence 15 yrs and Lawson 9yrs (note Lawson is shown as being 9 yrs of age and a son Edward died in 1899 so he could not be his father) William Walton married his wife Kate (born 17th January 1881,) in 1910 she was living at Someiser Road, New Banett In the 1911 cneus William is living on his own at Shipton Hill Felley Nottinghamshire he is shown as being 31 yrs a coal miner hewer.
Private William Walton enlisted before the outbreak of War at Notingham, he served with the 1st battalion Grenadier Guards, he landed with his battalion in France on 6th October 1914. He was killed in action on 20th October 1914 and having no known grave he is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial,
