Herbert Walters

Herbert Gregory Walters was born in 1889 at Selston and was the son of David a coal miner and Fanny Walters née Gregory of Talbot House, New Street, Underwood. His father David was born in 1856 at Heage, Derbyshire and his mother Fanny Gregory was born in 1858 at Kimberley, they were married on 23rd February 1875 at Selston, they went on to have 13 children, sadly three died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were James b1878, Samuel b1882, Reuben b1885, Albert b1886 they were born in Underwood, further children were Ethel b1888, Herbert b1889, David b1892, Millicent b1895 and Noel Walters b1898 all were born in Selston. In the 1911 census the family lived at Talbot Cottage,on New Street Underwood and were shown as David 55 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Fanny 53 yrs and their children, Ethel 23 yrs working at home, Herbert 21 yrs an assistant butcher, David 19 yrs a railway clerk, Millicent 16 yrs working at home, and Noel 13 yrs a scholar. Herbert married his wife Florence Andrews (born 1st January 1890) in 1912, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at Corby Lane, Brinsley and had a daughter Muriel Nesta born 22nd May 1913 Following his death his widow Florence was awarded a pension of 20 shillings and 5 pence a week commencing 2nd December 1918.
