Robert Plats was born in 1885 he was the son of William Platts and Eliza Platts (nee Truswell) the brother of Louise, James, William and John Platts, Edwin and Reuben Truswell and Edward North. Robert married Sarah Jane Beastall on 26th March 1910 at St Mary's Church, Sutton in Asfield. they lived at 138 Brand Lane, Stanton Hill In 1911 he lived at The Miners Arms Yard, Skegby with his wife Sarah Jane Platts (nee Beastall) and his son Walter born 20th November 1910 . He had two daughters Hannah Elizabeth b.1914-d.1915 aged 1 and Gladys May born 20 March 1916 a month after her father was killed in action.
12th (Service) Battalion (Pioneers) Was formed at Derby on 1st October, 1914, and became Army Troops attached to the 24th Division then stationed in the Shoreham Area. In April 1915, they became the Pioneer Battalion of the 24th Division and on the 29th August, 1915 they landed in France. It was this battalion which became famous for the production of the trench newspaper "Wipers Times" which it first began to print when in the Town of Ypres in Belgium in 1916. On the 11th November, 1918, they were still the Pioneer Battalion of the 24th Division and were at Le Louvion, East of Bavai.
My Great Grandfather Robert Platts enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) 12th Battalion. He was a Private No: 19512. He was killed in action in France & Flanders on the 15th February 1916 and was buried in Menin Road South Cemetery grave reference I C 9 He was awarded the Victory Medal. I have a copy of my Great Grandfathers Scroll and I am very proud of the sacrifice that he made for King and Country! His Great Grandaughter Debbie.
