Family History

James Platts (junior) was born in 1891 at Bagthorpe and was the son of James Platts (senior) a coal miner hewer and Kate Platts née Wright of Mansfield Road, Selston. His father James (senior) was born in 1864 at Selston, his mother Kate Wright was born in 1865 also at Selston, they were married on 2nd September 1885 at Bagthorpe baptisit church, they went on to have 11 children sadly 4 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children listed on the 1911 census were John b1889, James b1891, Florence b1896, Ernest b1900 and Sybil Platts b1904 all were born at Selston In the 1911 census the family lived on Mansfield Road Selston and were shown as James 47 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Kate 46 yrs and their children John 22 yrs a coal miner loader, James 20 yrs a coal miner, Florence 15 yrs of age no occupation listed, Ernest 11 yrs a scholar and Sybil 7 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private James Platts enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 10th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He landed in France on 25th August 1915, he died of wounds on 20th September 1917 and is buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery grave reference 24.F.18
